SCHOOL OF DANCE
SCHOOL OF DANCE

Welcome to the School of Dance!

The central focus of the School is on the high quality education and training of young dance artists for the profession/industry: performers, choreographers, and teachers who will be articulate advocates for their art form, and drive it forward with passion and energy. Small class sizes, highly experienced faculty from around the world, regular visits by internationally renown guest artists, and opportunities to not only perform in four major productions a year, but to also tour nationally and internationally, makes the School one of the leading dance conservatoires in the world – and an exciting place to be.

One of the primary features of the School is the emphasis on integration, both within and across courses, through the contextualization of performance practice into wider artistic, theoretical and socio-cultural frameworks. Thus integration occurs across the three major study areas of  Ballet, Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance; across practical and theoretical studies; across creative and performance practice; across undergraduate and postgraduate activity; and across eastern and western practices. Every advantage is also taken of the unique east-west nexus that lies at the heart of Hong Kong culture.

Curriculum

The extensive undergraduate curriculum offers a broad range of courses comprising both studio and academic work across the three dance styles of Ballet, Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance. Intensive technical training is complemented by contextual and interdisciplinary studies that reflect the best of current international developments in the education and training of dance artists.

Our students are prepared not only for company careers, but also for careers as independent free-lance artists and practitioners, with a consequent focus on the development of initiative, creativity, versatility, adaptability and a wide range of other transferable skills. Thus particular emphasis is given to the teaching a diverse range of styles and approaches in all three Majors, and to the exposure of students to different ways of working, whether technically or creatively.

Major Studies: Ballet
The Ballet Major encompasses a broad range of international ballet training styles and methods, along with a strong emphasis on the development of a pure and unaffected technique. The essential requirements needed to meet the high demands and professional standards for ballet in Hong Kong and internationally, lie at the heart of the programme. The curriculum comprises ballet technique (including pointe classes for females and virtuoso classes for males), partnering, repertory, contemporary dance and body conditioning. A broader contextual approach is also fostered, and students are also guided to analyse and critically reflect on their practice.
Chinese Dance

The Chinese Dance Major embraces a diversity of traditional Chinese Dance cultures and methods, and emphasises the requirements to meet the technical demands and professional standards of Chinese Dance in the international context. Chinese Classical and Folk Dance forms, Shen Yun, repertory, contemporary dance and body conditioning courses, comprise the Major. A broader contextual approach is fostered, and students are also guided to analyse and critically reflect on their practice. Importantly, emphasis is also placed on the heritage of traditional Chinese Dance, as well as the development of this heritage in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas.

Contemporary Dance

The Contemporary Dance Major encompasses a diverse range of styles and approaches, and while no particular style is favoured, the essential requirements needed to meet the professional standards and technical demands of contemporary dance in the international context are emphasised. The curriculum comprises contemporary dance techniques, ballet, improvisation/contact improvisation, repertoire and performance laboratory, body conditioning, and interdisciplinary skills. A broader contextual approach is fostered, and students are also guided to analyse and critically reflect on their practice. In addition, students are also guided in the development of the skills and knowledge needed to create original work, and given opportunities to perform that work publicly.

Contextual Studies

Contextual Studies include subjects that expand on, and place the students' Major Study into a broader context, in order to deepen their understanding of dance as an art form.

Courses in this area include:

Choreography
Dance Science
Dance Technology
Dance Perspectives
Dance Education

Elective Courses

ChoreographyA wide range of elective courses is available, within both the School of Dance, and across the Academy Schools – Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts, as well as the Department of Chinese Traditional Theatre.

Liberal Arts Courses

Liberal Arts courses are required for students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) degree.

Language Courses

Language courses are required for students in all programmes, with English, Mandarin/Putonghua and Cantonese offered.

Master of Fine Arts (Dance)

mfaThe MFA is an exciting new development in the School, providing quality post-graduate study for those who seek to place their professional practice into a broader context in which theory and practice are integrally linked. While including a number of required courses, the programme of study also allows for the selection of a wide range of courses offered by the School, the Graduate Education Centre, and other Schools in the Academy. This allows for depth and breadth, and the freedom to chart a programme of study tailored to meet individual needs and interests. Students work in a highly concentrated and self-directed environment under the mentorship and guidance of experienced faculty advisors.

As with the undergraduate programme, integration is a key feature - of practice and theory, of the performing arts disciplines, of professional practice with MFA study, and of students across the Academy’s other Schools. This rich and multi-dimensional environment supports the development of both new career paths and directions, and the generation of original work which contributes to knowledge and practice in the field of dance.
