Dr. Jordan is a world authority on the history, theory and practice of the Italian Commedia dell'Arte. His ground-breaking thesis challenges long-held assumptions about the nature of this ancient theatre form. A long article based on his research findings entitled, In Search of Pantalone and the Origins of the Commedia dell'Arte, was commissioned by the Belgian publication, Revue Internationale de Philosophie. In addition to his Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong, he holds a first class honours degree in Humanities from the Open University (UK). During his long career, he has acquired experience and skills in almost every aspect of theatre: as actor, director, movement director, fight choreographer, composer, musician, writer, and even stage manager. Among the many and diverse practitioners with whom he has collaborated over the years, are such luminaries as Professor Cesare Molinari, Graham Vick and Sir Peter Hall.
He started out as an actor over 25 years ago, working with both British and Italian companies and touring internationally. As a prominent member of the acclaimed Italian company, TAG Teatro of Venice, he performed in The Madness of Isabella ¡V an original 16th century Commedia scenario ¡V at the 1991 Hong Kong Arts Festival. His many other acting credits include: Kleinzeit, Diary of a Madman, The Bald Primadonna, Freaks, Harlequin Refined by Love, Sar-Shin, The Arabian Nights, Beyond the Mirror, The Triumph of Punch, La Locandiera, La Moscheta, The Merchant of Venice, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Scaramuccia, The Venetian Twins, Candide, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, What About Leonardo?, Les Miserables, The Road to Heaven, The Overcoat, Executive Dance and The Funeral Play.
As an instructor, he has worked for three of Britain's leading Drama schools: Drama Centre London, the Webber Douglas Academy and Guildford School of Acting. In addition, he has led countless workshops and modules for a number of British universities, schools and theatre companies. He has worked at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 1998, teaching a range of acting and movement-based courses. For the School of Drama, he has also contributed to the following plays, variously as director, co-director, composer, movement director and fight choreographer: The Tragic Events, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Mirandolina, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Rivals, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The True Story of Ah Q, Grimm Tales, The Miser, Vision Party, The Children's Hour, The New Apartment, Autumn Execution (including tour to Toronto, Canada) The Merchant of Venice, Tartuffe (including tour to Perth, Australia) and The Visit.
He is one of the few Hong Kong artists who direct both Cantonese and English language productions. His approach is strongly actor-centred, reflecting a belief that the work of the director should largely be invisible. He is equally at home directing intimate solo monologues with minimal back-up in small fringe venues, or large-scale effect-laden extravaganzas in three-tiered 1000-seat auditoria. One major unifying element in his work is a profound respect for the written word and painstaking textual analysis. He is extremely active in the professional theatre community and has collaborated with several leading Hong Kong companies. For Chung Ying Theatre, he was director, composer and fight choreographer for two award-winning productions: Les Miserables and Cyrano de Bergerac. For the Leisure and Cultural Services Department he directed the highly praised Ho Chi Minh in Hong Kong. For Hong Kong Repertory Company, he was fight director for Peter Pan. For Kingman Lo Productions, he directed movement and fights for the operas, Macbeth and Faust. For Theatre du Pif he performed in The Overcoat. Most recently, he directed the hit musical, I Love You. You're Perfect. Now Change, for Windmill Grass Theatre Company.
