The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts recruits non-local students to enhance the international character of the Academy.

About the Academy

A welcome note from the Director

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, established by Government Ordinance in 1984, is one of the leading institutes of higher arts education in Asia. It provides professional education, training and research facilities in the performing arts, theatre and entertainment arts, film and television. Its educational policy reflects the cultural diversity of Hong Kong with emphasis on Chinese and Western traditions and interdisciplinary complementarity.

Schools/Academic Units

The Academy has the following Schools / Academic Units:

  • School of Dance
  • School of Drama
  • School of Film and Television
  • School of Music
  • School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts
  • Chinese Traditional Theatre

  • Academic Programmes


    Academic programmes are offered by each of the five Schools from post-secondary Diploma level up to Master's Degree level. The Academy was granted degree awarding status of Bachelor Honours Degrees in 1992 and Master's Degrees in 2006 following accreditation by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAQV). The Degree programmes are externally validated by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation.

    Application Procedures

    Non-local applicants should have academic qualifications equivalent to those required for local students. Non-local applicants please refer to the specific entry requirements of each School and the Office of Chinese Traditional Theatre Programme.

    Tape and/or video recorded audition pieces may be accepted in some disciplines. If a non-local applicant's first language is not English, results in public English tests such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) should also be submitted with the application forms.

    Non-local applicants are advised to submit their application forms as early as possible to allow for audition arrangements or the submission of audition tapes to be made.

    Student Visa

    Non-local applicants need to apply for a student visa to enter and stay in Hong Kong for the period of study. Application for a student visa usually takes up to 3 months to process.

    In the case of a non-local applicant who has entered Hong Kong on a visitor/tourist visa, the Academy will not register him as a student and will not allow him to commence his studies until he obtains a student visa.

    In accordance with the Immigration Regulations of Hong Kong, any person who lands in Hong Kong as a student is not allowed to take any employment, whether paid or unpaid.

    Tuition Fees


    The Academy follows the advice of University Grants Committee of the Government (UGC) in respect of tuition fee levels for Degree and non-Degree programmes. The tuition fees are same for both the local and non-local students and are announced by the Government each year.

    Accommodation


    At present the Academy has no hostel facilities. Non-local students take the initiative to organise their own private accommodation either on an individual or a sharing basis.
