Two visitors from the internationally renowned Bolshoi are visiting the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts this week. Mr Anton Getman the Deputy Director of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, and Dr Marina Leonova, the Director of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy have been observing classes with a view to choosing Academy students from the Ballet stream to study for a semester (4 months) at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, starting September 2009.
Announcement of the winners was made on 11 March 2009 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in the presence of the two Bolshoi Directors, Russian Vice Consul Ms Victoria I Prokhorova, Academy Director Professor Kevin Thompson, Academy Dean of Dance Dr Anita Donaldson and some 40 students and staff members of the Academy Ballet stream.
The winners include: 23-years-old Yuan Shangjen (from Taiwan), 19-year-old Zhu Xiao-lin (from China), 18-year-old Emily Pak Ho-yi (from Hong Kong) and 17-year-old Song Hai-feng (from Shanghai). Yuan and Zhu joined the Academy Dance School in September 2007. Pak has previously joined the Academy's Junior programme and Gifted Young Dancers' Programme since 1996 and Song is a new comer who just been with the Academy since September 2008. The winners were extremely excited about this unique opportunity and Emily was filled with tears when she heard about the happy news.
Professor Kevin Thompson, Academy Director is delighted to be able to progress the collaborative venture with Bolshoi. 'This will be the first time that Chinese students are invited to study in this renowned cultural flagship. I believe the unique opportunity to join Bolshoi Ballet Academy will be a life-changing experience for these young dancers. The collaboration with Bolshoi is also an important milestone of maturity which celebrates the Academy's 25th anniversary year. I would like to congratulate the students and the Dance faculty in producing such talented dancers over so many years.'
Dr Anita Donaldson also remarks that 'The exchange opportunity will not only benefit the awardees. Their learning experience from Moscow will be shared among their fellow students and in turn contribute to the overall strength of the School.'
The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts recognises the strength of deep collaboration between established conservatories and performing arts institutions around the world. In 2007, the Academy organised the Juilliard School International Masterclass series, and the European League of Institutes of the Arts International Leadership Symposium with participants from four continents. Last year, the Academy and the Clore Leadership Programme co-presented the Clore Leadership Symposium with support of the Home Affairs Bureau. The Symposium provided an unique opportunity to strengthen cultural exchange between local cultural leaders and acknowledged UK leaders.
In the past fours years, the Academy has formalised collaboration agreements with major institutions including the Central Conservatory of Music, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Music Department of the University of Hong Kong, the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the Central Academy of Drama, the Theatre Academy of Finland in Helsinki and Royal College of Music, London and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
