Entry Requirements

ADMISSION

The Academy selects applicants for admission on the basis of the academic entry requirements specified for the various academic programmes as well as applicants' talents, attainments and relevant training, if any, in the chosen disciplines. Applicants may be asked to attend an audition and/or an interview or to submit a portfolio or to sit an entry test or a combination of these as deemed necessary by the Schools which offer the respective programmes.

2-YEAR DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

The 2-Year Diploma programmes of the Academy are foundation programmes which provide intensive training in preparation for further studies of the performing arts and theatre and entertainment arts at the tertiary level. The foundation programmes are designed for Form 5 school leavers or above and who have completed the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE). The Diploma will constitute the normal entry qualification for the Degree programmes and the Advanced Diploma programmes.

The School of Dance, the School of Drama and the School of Music each offers a 2-Year Diploma programme in Performing Arts in their respective disciplines.

In addition, a 2-Year fulltime Diploma programme and a 4-Year part-time Diploma programme in Performing Arts (Cantonese Opera) are offered.

BACHELOR HONOURS DEGREE PROGRAMMES

The three-year Bachelor Honours Degree programmes are designed with the objective of developing the students as professional performers or creative artists by integrating professional education and training in the chosen art disciplines with a range of liberal arts and language studies. This enables the students to acquire a broader perspective, deeper knowledge and understanding, as well as a heightened awareness of their respective chosen art disciplines in its historical and contemporary context. The students will also address the role of the artist in society and the meaning of their art in the wider fields of human endeavour. Emphasis is placed on interaction between the students' technical, interpretative, and creative skills on the one hand and their intellectual and analytical capabilities on the other. It is also the objective of the Academy, through its Degree programmes, to prepare professional performers and creative artists who are also informed, intelligent and articulate advocates of their art.

APPLICANTS WITH ACADEMY ADVANCED DIPLOMA

Applicants with an Advanced Diploma awarded by the Academy may apply for admission with advanced standing to the relevant Bachelor Honours Degree programme and be granted credits by exemption for some courses within the programme. Depending on their academic qualification and professional experience, and the requirements of the programme concerned, admitted applicants with an Advanced Diploma are normally allowed to complete the Degree programme within a minimum period of one-and-a-half years.

Students in an Advanced Diploma programme who have not yet completed the programme are not allowed to transfer to a Bachelor Honours Degree programme.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

The two-year Advanced Diploma programmes provide a completely integrated training to prepare and to qualify the students for a professional career in their chosen art discipline. These programmes are for those who have a Diploma but will not pursue further studies at Degree level.

The programmes are generally of one year's duration. In the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, Professional Diploma students may be allowed to extend their studies to two years.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for admission to the Professional Diploma programmes are:

(c) An appropriate qualification deemed equivalent to an Advanced Diploma of the Academy; or

(d) A Degree from a recognised tertiary institution.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES

The School of Dance, the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts offer Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Professional Certificate programmes which run parallel with the Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Professional Diploma programmes. Students will be expected to pursue a full major performance study but the requirements in the support and academic studies within the programmes will be reduced in appropriate cases in the light of previous accomplishment or preparation. These programmes are designed particularly for non-local students.

In addition, full-time and part-time Certificate and Advanced Certificate programmes in Performing Arts (Cantonese Opera) are offered in parallel to the Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes in Performing Arts (Cantonese Opera).

ADMISSION WITH ADVANCED STANDING

The Academy will consider admission with advanced standing for applicants who have satisfactorily completed relevant studies at an appropriate level at a recognised institution elsewhere or at the Academy, or who are in possession of significant professional experience which the Academy judges to merit credits by exemption in respect of some of the courses within the programmes. The Academy may admit such applicants with advanced standing and grant them credits by exemption for some courses within the programmes, subject to the entry requirements of the respective programmes being met and to the regulations of the Academy on admission with advanced standing.

Credits by exemption are normally granted for not more than half of the total number of credits required for graduation from the programme concerned. To be considered for graduation, students admitted with advanced standing shall have studied at the Academy for a minimum period which is equivalent to half of the normal period of study for the programme and have gained by study at the Academy at least half of the total number of credits required for graduation. A student admitted with advanced standing shall study on a full-time basis unless special approval for otherwise is granted by the Academy.
