Biography

Psyche Chui is the Senior Lecturer (Theatre Lighting Design) at HKAPA. She has worked as a professional lighting designer and theatre educator for over 31 years. 

As lighting designer Psyche has worked for every professional theatre and dance company in Hong Kong and for many performing companies internationally including those in Netherlands, Singapore, Korea, Canada, USA Mainland China and Macau. And local performing companies such as Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, Hong Kong Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet and Ching Ying Theatre Company. 

Psyche’s career achievements were recognized. She was honoured with a Youth Career Achievement Award (Theatre Lighting Design), was awarded Best Theatre Lighting Design Award by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies in 2005 and 2007.

Psyche Chui holds an Advance Diploma from HKAPA, an MFA from Middlesex University. Psyche studied lighting design at Indiana University and Yale University on an Asian Cultural Council grant in 1991. And in 1992, she was granted as a special research fellow mentored by Jennifer Tipton at Yale School of Drama.

She has been invited as Guest Lecturer and/or Visiting Professor by the Theatre Academy of Finland, Central Academy of Drama, China and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, and is regularly invited as Guest Speaker at International Lighting Symposiums and professional or academic conferences. 

Psyche is a professional member of Hong Kong Association of Theatre Technicians and Scenographers (HKATTS). The committee members of Drama Education and lighting design in the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).
