The Academy brings Arts to Sham Shui Po – A Six-hour Marathon Performance

The first Performing Arts Marathon @Sham Shui Po project organized by the Performing Arts Education Centre from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts ("the Academy") aims to bring arts to the neighborhood and break the high entry barrier for attending arts activity. In this connection, the Academy will present a substantial and remarkable event in Sham Shui Po on 13 May 2012 (Sunday), during which more than 200 participating primary and secondary students from Sham Shui Po district will perform, parade and run arts stalls at various locations in Sham Shui Po together with the Academy's faculties, students and alumni, more than 30 professional performing arts groups and artists, and social organizations from the district. The event is made possible with the generosity of corporate sponsor Bloomberg, and admission to all activities in this project is free. The project highlights that arts education be centred on daily life, fuse with the social and cultural context, consolidate the sense of community and improve as well as invigorate the local cultural life.

Transforming Sham Shui Po into a Performance Stage - Along with Arts Stalls and Parade

The main stage on the day of the activity will be arranged at Maple Street Playground in Sham Shui Po, at which six hours of non-stop arts performances will be held, with a view to deliver a series of wonderful drama, music, dance and opera performances to the audience. Inside the venue, one can also find numerous designated stalls on performing arts, among which are demonstrations on stage make-up, headdress and hair-style plus sand drawing and paper tearing art. The highlighted programme for the project, "Arts Parade in Sham Shui Po", will commence at 3:30pm, featuring dragon dance, flag parade, costumes and props demonstration, and also percussion and dance performance. This programme witnesses the concerted development of and participation in the project by faculties and students from the Academy as well as participating secondary and primary school students alike. The parade will start at Maple Street Playground and perform along Cheung Sha Wan Road for an hour, showcasing artistic creativity and the vitality and unique characteristics of Sham Shui Po.

Site-specific Dance, Exhibition and Video Screening

Concurrently, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre will also turn into another performance stage for the project, underlying the rich diversity of its programmes and venues. The site-specific dance held in the Centre, which will be co-performed by the faculties and students in the School of Dance from the Academy and the participating students, will bring to the fore the cultural diversity of Sham Shui Po through the interaction between the unique environment and dance. At the same time, the organizer will also hold an exhibition and video screening at the centre, which displays the creativity and learning outcomes of participating students and serves to narrate the story of Sham Shui Po. Award-winning works by graduates in the School of Film and TV from the Academy will also be screened.

Lingnan Garden - Chinese Music and Cantonese Opera Performance

The organizer takes particular effort in extending the performance stage to different parts of the district - "Lingnan Garden" in Lai Chi Kok Park being one prominent example. In this Chinese-style park, which is unique in Hong Kong for its classical Lingnan flavor, the audience may enjoy a special kind of performance of Chinese music and Cantonese opera.

With the project, the organizer hopes to present fantastic cultural and arts performances to the citizens, in order to spice up the neighborhood and foster the participation in regional arts activities. The immense richness and wide variety of the programmes will also prove a particularly good choice for the family who would like to have fun on Mother's Day. We sincerely invite you to join us and watch the various creative programmes on performing arts, and enjoy a Sunday of performing arts imbued with plenty of joy.
