05 December 2016 Category : General

The Academy Ball “ART DECODANCE” organised by The Society of the Academy for Performing Arts (SAPA) was held on Saturday 3 December 2016 at the Academy’s Lyric Theatre. The Academy Ball is one of the focal events of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (the Academy) with an aim of raising scholarship funds for the Academy. With its unwavering dedication in arts, the Ball’s title sponsor Jaeger-LeCoultre has generously supported the Ball for the second year. It has committed a 3-year sponsorship for the Academy Ball since last year to support the development of performing arts students and emerging talents in Hong Kong.

The Ball was attended by over 400 eminent guests, donors and supporters of the Academy. The funds raised would be contributed towards scholarships, including the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Performing Arts Scholarships”, to support the development of Academy students.

The Ball was chaired by Ms Winnie Chiu, with two Vice Chairladies Mrs Jini Wu and Ms Yvette Yung and attended by distinguished members of the community. Mrs Regina Leung, wife of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government and Honorary Patron of SAPA, was the Guest of Honour. Other special guests include Secretary for Justice The Hon Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung, Academy Council Chairman Professor Stephen Chow Chun-kay, Academy Director Professor Adrian Walter, SAPA Joint President Dr Sophia Kao Lo and Chief Executive Officer of Jaeger-LeCoultre Mr Daniel Riedo.

Inspired by the movie filming sets in 1930s, the venue was decorated in beautiful Art Deco style with geometries and dramatic flourishes, bringing the guests back to an elegant ballroom in 1930s. The evening was kicked off by the wonderful orchestral performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue by Academy music students. Guests of the evening were treated to a number of stellar performances by talented Academy students and celebrities including: a black and white silent movie directed and produced by a team of alumni of School of Film and Television, marvellous singing performance by Ms Jasmine Yen and a Celebrity Moment by nine celebrities including Mr Daniel Chan, Ms Emily Chang, Ms Laura Cheung, Ms Charmaine Ho, Ms Sabrina Ho, Ms Wendy Yu, Ms Mandy Yu and two beautiful young ladies Ms Kriscia Koong and Ms Shermaine Lai to present Jaeger-LeCoultre watches collection. The evening was filled up with visual aesthetics and dazzle. Academy Music students and professional musicians also performed to add colours to the evening.

A charity auction was conducted during the gala. Eight precious items donated by generous sponsors were auctioned for the raising funds for the Ball.

Academy Director Professor Adrian Walter was grateful for the dedication of Ms Winnie Chiu, Mrs Jini Wu and Ms Yvette Yung in organising this spectacular event, and extended his appreciation to SAPA Joint Presidents, Dr Sophia Kao Lo and Ms Alison Lusher, and all committee members for their continuous and generous support. Proceeds of the Academy Ball will contribute towards Academy student scholarships and other initiatives that are not supported by the Government.

Established in 1989, SAPA is the major fundraising arm of the Academy. Most of the funds raised have been donated as student scholarships, enabling highly talented and deserving local and international students to pursue studies in the performing arts. The balance of the funds is applied to capital improvements, the purchase of musical instruments and overseas study tours by Academy students.
