Biography

Professor Anna CY Chan is a practicing arts educator, performer, producer, curator and administrator for years and currently she is the Dean of School of Dance at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.  She received her professional dance training in Hong Kong, Australia and UK and holds a Professional Dancer Diploma from the Royal Ballet School (London), an MA degree in Dance Studies from the University of Surrey and M.Ed degree from the University of Sheffield.

Anna was the Head of Dance, Performing Arts of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority from 2014-2018. In her tenure as Head of Dance, she was responsible for shaping the district’s artistic direction and strategies for dance. Under her leadership, a series of programmes that offer Hong Kong artists a platform to explore innovative forms of creating and performing with international artists have been launched and co-presented, including "Dance Dialogue with Wayne McGregor", "Screendance", "Writing Choreographic Process", "Dance x Multi-media", "Choreographer x Composer Lab", "Dance in Alternative Space", "Dramaturgy and Beyond" and a new initiative of cultural exchange and creation programme "Creative Meeting Point" between Finland, Australia, Spain, Italy & UK. She also led her dance team to produce WKCDA’s monthly WE Dance programme, ON VIEW: Hong Kong and Look Two Ways productions, and initiated and launched the development of Asia Network for Dance (AND+) in May 2018. Apart from programme development, Anna also collaborated with WKCDA’s project development team, architects and theatre designers on the design of the Freespace (450 seats Blackbox theatre) which opened in May 2019, the Lyric Theatre Complex (1450, 600 & 250 seats theatres) and the first Resident Company Center for Dance which will be opened in 2022/23.

Prior of joining WCKDA, Anna worked at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2003-2014.  She first joint the Academy as lecturer with School of Dance and in 2007, she was appointed by the Academy to head and launch the newly established Performing Arts Education Centre (PAE) which focuses on the development of performing arts education in the context of the Academy’s mission and vision. During the 11 years tenure at the Academy, she launched the Gifted Young Dancer Programme for School of Dance, launched three secondary school applied learning curriculum in dance, drama & Cantonese opera for the Hong Kong Education Bureau, wrote several BFA & MFA modules for the Academy, served a key role in developing the School of Drama’s MFA theatre education programme, has been a member on the Academy’s Board of Undergraduate Education and Board of Graduate Education  and involved in several major Academy’s curriculum reform, quality assurance and self accreditation. As Head of PAE, she is also involved in the development of local and international networks to strategize and raise awareness of performing arts education within community activities and government circles in Hong Kong and has launched and co-presented several successful community engagement projects, SMARTS Journey, the first World Conference 2009 on Drama and Education in Chinese Communities with Hong Kong Drama/Theatre and Education Forum, the International Dance Symposium 2010 for the Hong Kong Dance Festival 2010 and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Award winning community arts project Performing Arts Marathon@Shumshuipo.

Anna was the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance from 2006-2011 and the Vice-President (East Asia) of the World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific (WDAAP) 2007-2017 and serves as Dance Advisor of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2008. She has been invited as keynote speaker, presenter and guest lecturer in many international symposium, festivals, cultural summits, conferences and university in Australia, Belgium, China, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and USA. She was awarded Hong Kong Dance Award in 2004, City Contemporary Dance Laureate in 2016 and the prestigious Hong Kong Dance Award for Distinguished Achievement in recognition for her indefatigable work in dance education, promotion of Hong Kong dance, and innovations in ways to create, present, and sustain dance in 2018.  She also serves on the American Dance Abroad inaugural advisory council, as international jury for the 2018 Keir Choreographic Award in Australia, the 17th Taishin Arts Award, and 2017 Seoul International Choreography Festival. She is currently member of the Performing Arts Committee of West Kowloon Cultural District, member of programme committee of Tai Kwun Hong Kong’s Centre for Heritage and Arts and Visiting Professor at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijjng.
