Biography

Li Yongjing is a distinguished dance artist and experienced educator and choreographer. She is currently Lecturer of Contemporary Dance and MFA advisor at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Her teaching area includes Contemporary Dance Technique, Performance Lab, Improvisation, Repertory, Personal Project and Choreographing new work for School productions. 

Li graduated from The HKAPA with Distinction in 2002, majoring in Modern Dance, she received full scholarships to continue her study at the Academy and was awarded Master of Fine Arts in Dance in 2008. After graduation, Li was immediately invited by the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company to teach the Modern Dance Diploma Programme at the Guangdong Dance School, she helped to nurture a group of outstanding modern dance artists in Mainland China. In 2004, she was invited by the Odyssey Dance Theatre in Singapore to join the company as an Artist in Residence. Li’s outstanding performances has received unanimous recognition.  She is regularly invited to perform around the world, visiting countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. When she was still an APA student, she received the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2001 for her exceptional performance in Interiors by Australian choreographer Csaba Buday, and later in 2012 with her choreography and performance in a duet The Moment I Saw It received the Outstanding Independent Dance of the Hong Kong Dance Award.

In 2013, Li was appointed as a full-time Contemporary Dance Lecturer at the HKAPA. During this period, she has participated in the curriculum reform and review of the School BFA and MFA programme, and since 2014, she has also served as an MFA Advisor, many of the graduate students under her supervision have graduated with Distinction and became Dance teacher or choreographer in professional dance school and company in Mainland China after graduation. From 2007 to 2019, Li also served as the Main teacher and Course coordinator of the HKAPA Applied Learning Course “Taking a Chance on Dance”, she participated in the course pilot operation and was also responsible for teaching surveillance operation, recommended for instructors to ensure the quality of teaching, ensure the quality of teaching and learning, provide advice on Curriculum design/Assessment criteria and course arrangement etc, she has contributed to dance education in Hong Kong over the years. 

Li has 20 years of experience teaching modern dance, covering non-professional and professional students as well as professional dancers. She has taught master classes and lectures at several dance companies and institutions, including Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong E-side Dance Company, Hong Kong Baptist University, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Guangzhou University College of Music & Dance, Guangdong ATV Academy for Performing Arts and Pusan National University in Korea. Her recent choreographic works include Moment, The Moment I Saw It, Lost Squares, Afterimage, Human Factor, Sense of Distance, Beyond Restraint, Thoughts of Mind, Dreamer, Move to Heaven and full-length work Creature of the Night etc. Creature of the Night was shortlisted for Hong Kong Dance Award 2019 Outstanding Small Venue Production.
