Biography
Mr Bill Cheung is a Lecturer in Contextual Studies in Theatre Design in the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Cheung obtained both his Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His academic and creative research focuses on spatial narrative, immersive performance environments, and the evolving role of scenography within contemporary theatre practice.
Bridging theory and professional practice, his work examines how spatial design constructs narrative structures, shapes audience perception, and redefines spectatorship in site-responsive and immersive contexts.
As a professional set and costume designer, Mr Cheung has collaborated with major performing arts organisations in Hong Kong. His production The Impossible Trial (Joint production by West Kowloon Cultural District and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre) received Best Production of the Year and Best Set Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.
His portfolio includes musicals, Cantonese opera, dance, drama, immersive theatre, and site-specific works. He has also contributed to large-scale themed entertainment projects, as well as film and television productions, extending his spatial practice across multiple performance platforms.
Through both research and professional practice, Mr Cheung continues to engage with contemporary discourse on scenography and spatial design in Hong Kong.
