Biography
Mr William Chan is a Lecturer in the Performing Arts Research Department at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Chan holds an MFA in Media Design and Technology from the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong, as well as a double MA in International Performance Research from the University of Warwick (UK) and the University of Arts in Belgrade (Serbia).
His teaching and research interests include practice-based research, reflective practice, documentation, archiving, and critical writing in the field of performing arts. He also focuses on documentation theatre-making and the historiography of Hong Kong drama development.
Mr Chan has over 10 years of experience in higher education. Before joining HKAPA, he worked as a full-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Kwun Tong) for three years, during which he led and developed the Higher Diploma programme in Artiste and Cultural Management.
Since 1998, Mr Chan has contributed reviews and feature articles on visual arts, dance and theatre productions for various Hong Kong and Macau media. He was the co-editor of the first “Hong Kong Drama Yearbook” in 2006, and from 2015 to 2017, he served as Project Manager for the International Association for Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) for the “Archive and Oral History Project on Hong Kong Drama (Phase 1)”. Between October 2019 and December 2021, he was the editor of “dance journal/hk”, published by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance.
Currently, Mr Chan is a jury member of the Hong Kong Dance Awards, Hong Kong Theatre Libre, and the IATC(HK) Critics Awards. He is also an Examiner in Arts Administration, Arts Criticism, Dance, Drama, and Film & Media Arts at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
