Biography

Dr Monica Chen is a Senior Lecturer in the General Education Department at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.


Dr Chen holds a PhD in English Language Education from The University of Hong Kong and an MA in English Language Teaching with Distinction from the University of Warwick, UK. In addition, she has obtained a professional certificate in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, reflecting her expertise in multilingual language education. Her research interests include teacher education, language pedagogy, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and English literature.


With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr Chen has taught a diverse range of courses, including Sociolinguistics, Translation, and English for Academic and Specific Purposes (EAP/ESP). Prior to joining HKAPA, she held teaching positions at several tertiary institutions, contributing to curriculum development and language instruction.


As Language Team Leader, Dr Chen is committed to advancing the quality of language education across programmes, including the MFA degrees. Her work focuses on developing students’ proficiency in both spoken and written communication, enabling them to use language effectively in academic, professional, and creative contexts.
