
Biography
Mr German Cheung is a Lecturer in Technical Direction in the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Entertainment Arts from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals awarded by the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (United Kingdom), and a Professional Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health from the School of Continuing Education, Hong Kong Baptist University. He has also received professional training from the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), Artek Formations, and Total Trainings. He is a Certified Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CertIOSH) and a Member of the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT). His teaching and practice areas include stage technology, technical direction for productions, venue operations, workplace health and safety, and theatre automation.
Mr Cheung began his career as a freelance draughtsperson and technical coordinator for commercial events, and contributed to local drama productions. Prior to joining the Academy, he was involved in automation installation projects at theme parks and technical operations at various performing arts venues. In collaboration with his colleagues, he translated the International Code of Practice for Entertainment Rigging (ICoPER) into Traditional Chinese to promote best practices within the industry. He has also authored Risk Assessment for Performing Arts Production Activities — A Primer, a publication on health and safety in the performing arts context.
Mr Cheung’s current focus is on automation, the application of new technologies in theatre-making, sustainable practices, and cultivating a culture of health and safety in the performing arts.
