
Biography
Ms Liu Li is a Lecturer in Performance - Chinese Opera and Projects Leader in the School of Chinese Opera at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
An alumnus of the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School, Ms Liu is a protégé of the renowned Cantonese opera artist Tsang Wai, from whom she learned the “Fang style” of singing. She has also benefited from the teachings of many top performers and trainers including Hong Xiannu (Hung Sin-nui), Lau Mei-hing, Cheng Pui-ying, Lee Yin-ching, and Tsou Sau-kam.
Her teaching and artistic practice areas include Cantonese opera performance, role interpretation, vocal technique, and the transmission of Cantonese operatic traditions. With over 10 years of experience in higher education, she specialises in the roles of guimendan (unmarried high-born lady), xiaodan (unmarried vivacious female), and qingyi (woman with decent character).
Full-length and excerpt performances starring Ms Liu include The Woman from Xiguan, Romance of the Countryside, The Peony Pavilion, The Legend of Purple Hairpin, The Ten-Year Dream, Goddess of the Luo River, Romance Across the East Wall, Lust is the Worst Vice, Iron Cavalry, Silver Match, Ping Gui Bids Farewell, The Phoenix Pavilion, Bestows the Gift of a Sword at Baihua Pavilion, Butterfly Dream, Tryst in the Firewood Shed, and Saving Pui. She is the winner of several theatre awards in Guangdong and has taken part in many performances in Hong Kong, Macau, Toronto, and Singapore, all of which were well received by audiences, fellow artists, and industry veterans.
In February 2014, Ms Liu won an award for outstanding performance at the Rising Stars in Cantonese Opera Showcase organised by the Xiqu Centre of the West Kowloon Cultural District. She continues to contribute to the promotion and transmission of Cantonese opera through her teaching and performance at the Academy.
