Biography

Ms April Chow is a Lecturer in Performance - Chinese Opera in the School of Chinese Opera at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Ms Chow obtained a Master in Education from The Education University of Hong Kong in 2025, which deepened her understanding of educational theories and pedagogy and sparked her exploration into the development of Cantonese opera education. Her teaching and artistic practice areas include Cantonese opera performance, role interpretation, repertoire development, and the integration of educational theory into Chinese opera training.

Ms Chow received Cantonese opera training jointly organized by The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong and local tertiary institutions in her early years, under the guidance of Wong Ka-ling, Chow Lei-lei, Hui Kin-shun and Cheng Manying. These experiences carried profound artistic significance for her subsequent professional development. Ms Chow was accepted as a disciple of the renowned virtuoso Lam Kam-tong to deepen her knowledge of stage performance in Cantonese opera.

In addition to performing with various professional Cantonese opera troupes, Ms Chow also studied Cantonese opera music accompaniment and participated in professional productions as an accompanist. In recent years, she has frequently taken part in Cantonese opera performances organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and has actively engaged in cross-disciplinary artistic work, including drama performances and serving as a movement coach for theatre productions.

With 20 years of experience in higher education, Ms Chow specialises in playing female roles on stage and continues to contribute to the promotion and transmission of Cantonese opera through her teaching, mentorship, and leadership at the Academy.
