Biography

Mr Alex Cheung is a Lecturer in Directing/Movement in the School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. 


Mr Cheung graduated from HKAPA in 1994 with a Professional Diploma in Performing Arts, and obtained a Master’s degree from Fo Guang University in Taiwan. Upon graduation, Mr Cheung worked with various professional and experimental theatre groups in Hong Kong, including Theatre Ensemble, Prospects Theatre Company, Exploration Theatre, and Sand and Bricks. He also participated in cross-cultural people’s theatre projects such as The Big Wind (1995) and Cry of Asia 2 (1996), touring across Asia.


From 1997 to 2017, he was a core member of Taiwan’s U-Theatre, undertaking rigorous interdisciplinary training in martial arts, meditation, percussion, Tai Chi, and performance methods influenced by Jerzy Grotowski. He toured internationally and performed at major festivals such as the Festival d’Avignon, Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, and the Next Wave Festival in New York.


His directing works include Follow You? Follow Me?, You Yuen, and I Am Samurai Musashi — Q! Q! Q!. His work 2012 Night Ritual was shortlisted for the Taishin Arts Award Top Ten. Hamlet b received Best Director and Best Overall Performance at the 3rd Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards, with a further nomination at the 4th edition, while Diving was selected as one of the annual outstanding productions at Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre. More recently, he directed the Academy’s drama production, The Blind, received Outstanding Director, Best Scenography, and Outstanding Performance at the 13th Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards, and The Ten Oxen was nominated for the IATC (HK) Critics Awards for Performance of the Year.


Mr Cheung is the Co-Artistic Director of Mobius Strip Theatre and a Member of the Board of Directors of Theatre du Pif. His practice integrates physical training, intercultural performance, and actor-centred directing methodologies.
