Mr TANG Acty

Biography

Mr Acty Tang is the Head of Directing in the School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. 

 

Mr Tang obtained a Master’s degree in Drama with Distinction from Rhodes University in South Africa and began teaching in its Drama Department in 2002. In 2012, he joined The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, teaching a range of part-time courses across the School of Drama and the School of Dance, and became a full-time faculty member in 2023.

 

Born in Hong Kong, Mr Tang spent his formative years in South Africa where he began both his theatre and teaching careers. He won the Standard Bank Young Artist award in South Africa in 2007, and was nominated for Handspring Award for Best Visual Theatre Production in 2010, Gauteng Award for Dance and Choreography Best Male Performer in 2008, and DaimlerChrysler Award for South African Choreography in 2003 respectively. 

 

His creative work ranged from physical theatre and drama on stage, to site-specific interdisciplinary performance and videodance. In Asia, he has performed and presented work in Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok. He has directed five productions at HKAPA: Order, Howl, Offending the Audience, Trust and The Wonderful World of Dissocia; and collaborated on Mnemonic with Mr Roy Szeto.

 

Mr Tang has published several journal articles and presented conference papers at South Africa’s Dramatic Learning Spaces: National Research Conference and World Congress of International Drama / Theatre and Education Association, and has served as peer reviewer for South African Theatre Journal. He has served as external examiners for the University of Cape Town and Witwatersrand University. He also participated as a facilitator in the Transcultural Collaboration MFA-level course initiated by Zurich University of the Arts, in collaboration with HKAPA and other Asian partners. 

 

His current teaching areas include storytelling, Shakespeare, postdramatic theatre, play analysis, collaborative practice and theatre semiotics.
