
Biography
Mr Tsai Chih-wei is a Lecturer in Performance - Chinese Opera in the School of Chinese Opera at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Tsai graduated from the National Kuo Kuang Academy of Arts (Department of Chuan Tong Xi Ju) in 1998 and from the Taiwan Film Producers Association in 2000. With over 10 years of experience in higher education, his teaching and artistic practice areas include Chinese Opera performance, stage movement, role interpretation, martial artistry, film and television production, and the transmission of operatic traditions through education and outreach.
Professionally trained in Peking Opera, Mr Tsai specialises in the wusheng (martial male) and wenwu chou (comic) roles. He has received numerous awards including three championships and one second-place award at a Singapore TV Drama competition in 1997, and a Special Award in a Japanese Roleplay competition in 1999. He was interviewed by CCTV-4 in 2002 and has toured extensively in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, Canada, and Europe between 2003 and 2024.
After relocating to Hong Kong in 2007, Mr Tsai has served as a member of The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong from the 35th to the 40th term. He has also served as a tutor, lecturer, performer, and martial artist at various local institutions including The Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong Limited (COA), YMCA, secondary schools under Po Leung Kuk and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. He continues to contribute to the promotion and development of Chinese opera through his teaching and performance at the Academy.
