Biography

Mr Sunny Chan is a Lecturer in Screenwriting and Creative Development in the School of Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

 

Mr Chan obtained a Master of Arts in Chinese from Lingnan University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Film and Television from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts respectively. His professional expertise encompasses film direction, screenwriting, playwriting, creative writing, and exhibition curation.

 

Mr Chan is also a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter, and television presenter. His cinematic career began in 2000. During the 2000s, he established his profile as a screenwriter for numerous commercial hits, including Funeral March (2001), the Love Undercover series (2002–2006), and The Lion Roars (2002). As a director, his debut feature Men on the Dragon (2018) received 11 nominations at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

 

Mr Chan’s subsequent work, Table for Six (2022), achieved significant commercial success, grossing over HK$77 million at the local box office to become one of the highest-grossing Hong Kong films in history. The film earned 11 nominations at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards, where Mr Chan was once again nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay. For this work, he was awarded the Best Screenplay of the Year by the Hong Kong Screenwriters’ Guild. Beyond cinema, he has authored over twenty books and served as a playwright for stage productions such as Yat-sen Musical and Table for Six on Stage.
