Biography
Mr Justin Lau is the Head in Screen Production and Research Centre in the School of Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Lau obtained Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong with a scholarship from the “Swire University Scholarship Fund”, his Master of Design from the School of Design in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and his Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Professional and Vocational Education) from The Hong Kong Institute of Education. Mr Lau is a Lifetime Professional Member of Hong Kong Designers Association (MHKDA), Certified Professional of Autodesk 3ds Max Design, and a Registered Teacher under Hong Kong Education Ordinance.
Mr Lau has established himself as a seasoned creative director, art director and freelancer. His expertise encompasses various domains of commercial design, including graphic design, branding, publishing, advertising, web and interaction, event and exhibition, and photography. Throughout his career, Mr Lau has dedicated himself to the advancement of design education, focusing on creativity, studio practice, curriculum development, and the design of experiential learning activities.
Prior to joining HKAPA, Mr Lau held academic positions in numerous tertiary education institutes, including the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, College of Professional and Continuing Education at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, Hong Kong Design Institute, School of Continuing and Professional Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, London College of Communication at University of Arts London, Coventry University, University of Sunderland, and Raffles Design Institute, among others.
Mr Lau's dedication to community engagement and his innovative approach have earned him recognition through various incubation and innovation awards, underscoring his ability to merge creative talent with business insight. He has supervised numerous award-winning projects, including the HK4As Student Advertising Award, where he guided recipients to success with the Best of Show and Gold Award, as well as the Second-Class Award in Design at the 7th National College Student Art Exhibition and Performance, organised by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
Currently, Mr Lau is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, supported by a scholarship since 2023.
