
Biography
Mr Chan Ying Wai is a Senior Lecturer in Film/TV Directing in the School of Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Chan obtained a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Chan’s teaching and artistic practice areas include film and television directing, documentary filmmaking, episodic drama storytelling, and sound design. He has more than fifteen years of experience in higher education and professional filmmaking practice. Deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of directors, he emphasises real-world learning that integrates observations from reality to inspire fictional and dramatic film creation, and guides students with clarity and empathy—qualities he has honed through both his own creative work and his long dedication to education.
Mr Chan has directed, written, and produced projects for major Hong Kong broadcasters and international festivals. He is currently focusing on the ongoing development of the BFA programme in film directing, with particular emphasis on preparing students for the demands of streaming-era episodic storytelling.

Mr Chan has been recognised with a nomination for Best TV Movie at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2023, Finalist in the Drama Category at the New York TV & Film Festivals 2023, the Best Film Award and the Big Wave Award at the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival.
