Biography
Mr Vincent Cheung is the Head of Screen Production Practices in the School of Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Mr Cheung obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His teaching, research, and professional interests include screen production, cinematography, editing, visual effects, virtual production, immersive storytelling, and collaborative pre-production methodologies.
Mr Cheung is also the co-developer of cineDESK, a research project that investigates interactive and collaborative approaches to film pre-production, with particular focus on scene blocking, staging, and previsualisation through virtual cinematics. The project supports creative collaboration among key production roles and reflects his ongoing interest in the relationship between screen pedagogy, emerging technologies, and professional practice.
Mr Cheung has been active in the screen industries of Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong since the early 2000s. He began his career at Television Broadcasts Limited, Hong Kong, where he worked as a visual producer creating promotional videos and short-form programmes. In 2006, he served as Visual Effects Supervisor for the feature films A Mob Story (2007) and Fate (2008), produced by Andrew Lau. He later contributed to the post-production design and workflow development of films including Hot Summer Days (2010) and As the Light Goes Out (2014).
Alongside his work in feature film, Cheung has contributed to more than 50 commercials and branded content projects for international clients including Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Olay, Chevrolet, Toyota, Estée Lauder, Nike, Sony, and Porsche. In 2014, he joined Digital Domain as Visual Effects Supervisor and Film Director. Expanding into immersive media, he began working in virtual reality filmmaking in 2016, and in 2017 produced Porsche’s first VR commercial in Shanghai. He later served as Creative Director and Commercial Director at Shanghai Gwantsi, where he participated in a range of virtual production projects. In 2019, he was Head Visual Director for The Chengdu Giant Panda Museum, where he contributed to the development of immersive visual experiences for public engagement.
His work has received professional recognition, including the Gold Award at the 2017 ECI Awards for Cross Fire. His VR commercial work for Cross Fire was also recognised by the China Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
