Biography

Ms Tsang Tsui-shan is a Lecturer in Screen Production and Creative Development in the School of Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. 

 

Ms Tsang is an award-winning filmmaker and film educator. She received the Best New Director Award at the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards in 2012. Ms Tsang obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Television at The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (2001) and further completed her Master’s degree in Media Design and Technology at City University of Hong Kong (2005).

 

As a director, Ms Tsang is known for her humanitarian narratives and focuses on female stories, with works recognised at major international film festivals. Her directorial debut, Lovers on the Road (2008), won the Best Drama Award at the 8th South Taiwan Film Festival. Her second feature, Big Blue Lake (2011), received the Asian New Talent Jury Prix at the Shanghai International Film Festival and was recommended by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society as one of the year’s best films. Her French-Hong Kong co-production documentary Flowing Stories (2016) was honoured with FilmAid Asia's Humanitarian Award. Her other feature films include Scent (2014) and The Lady Improper (2019).

 

In recent years, Ms Tsang has expanded her creative practice through interdisciplinary collaborations, working with local dancers since 2015 on dance video works that have been exhibited across Europe and North America. In 2022, her inaugural VR project Chroma 11 was selected for the Venice Immersive section at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, marking the first Hong Kong VR film to receive this recognition. Her latest documentary feature, Winter Chants (2023), was recommended by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society.

 

Alongside her filmmaking career, Ms Tsang is also an experienced educator. She has served as a lecturer and Artist-in-residence at leading institutions, sharing her expertise in filmmaking, digital storytelling, and immersive design.
