This is an innovative programme providing opportunities for graduates of cinema production courses, or similar, and experienced practitioners to broaden and renew their prior production knowledge and experience. The programme encourages and enables participants to explore the operational and aesthetic complexities of contemporary cinema production. Students will experience the collaborative nature of contemporary cinema production and explore how each specialised role enriches the complex art of cinema practice. Students will develop and produce a screen project from initial concept to screening of the final artefact. Each student may pitch an idea for development and production funding to a panel of screen industry representatives.
Upon completion of the programme, students will be equipped to conceive, develop and produce or participate in creative projects. Successful graduates will not only receive an MFA qualification but also take away significant creative and practical production experience, a network of like-minded colleagues, and a recognised screen industry production credit.

Directed by 2013 graduate Choi Ian Sin, Tracy, the film Sisterhood won the Macao Audience Choice Award at The 1st International Film Festival & Awards Macao, as well as receiving multiple nominations, including Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer at the 36th Hong Kong Film Awards.
Directed by 2013 graduate Choi Ian Sin, Tracy, the film Girlfriends was selected for the Vision Asia section at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
2013 graduate Gan Jianyu directed the film Octopus with Broken Arms, which grossed over 900 million RMB at the mainland China box office and received multiple awards and nominations, including the Best Film Award at the 2025 Tokyo Chinese Film Week Golden Crane Awards, and a nomination for Best Film at the 17th Macau International Film Festival's "Golden Lotus Award".
Directed by 2013 graduate Gan Jianyu, the film Vortex which was selected for the Golden Goblet Award at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival.
2013 graduate Zhang Ying won the Best Cinematography Golden Goblet Award at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival for the film A Man and a Woman.
2013 graduate Zhang Ying was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 12th Macau International Film Festival's Golden Lotus Award and at the 33rd China Film Golden Rooster Awards for his work as cinematographer on the film Sheep Without a Shepherd.
2016 graduate Zhu Zhili served as screenwriter and director for the feature film project Ah Ji, which was selected for the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) "Film Training Programme" and "Projects in Development” and was shortlisted at the Beijing International Film Festival and the Golden Rooster Film Project Investment Conference.
2019 graduate Lai Yu Man, Maurice's works On View: Hong Kong and On View: Panoramic Suite won the Outstanding Visual Design award at the Hong Kong Dance Awards.
2021 graduate Guo Yapeng's directed and written project The Birth of a Movie won the Future Star Future Potential Work Award at the First International Film Festival.
Area of Specialisation
This is an intensive and rigorous programme in high-end cinema production. The curriculum covers traditional and contemporary approaches to cinema production. The primary specialisation offered on the programme is narrative film production in which students will choose from one of the creative roles (listed below) to complete their Thesis Project.
Students looking to complete their Thesis Project in documentary filmmaking or feature-length screenplay writing, may submit a written proposal for review and is subject to approval.
Students will learn skills and enhance knowledge from the following range of creative roles:
- Producer (including Production Management)
- Director (including Assistant Directing)
- Screenwriter
- Cinematographer (including Camera Operation and Lighting)
- Editor (including Continuity)
- Sound Designer (including Recording, Editing, and Mixing)
- Production Designer (including Art Directing)
During the development, production and post production phases of the Thesis Project, each crew role will have access to professional cinema industry advisors.
