Admissions with Advanced Standing

The Academy may admit students with advanced standing to MFA/MMus programmes on individual merit. Students admitted with advanced standing shall have satisfied admissions requirements of the relevant programme of study before admissions with advanced standing can be considered.

Advanced standing may be granted to students who have satisfactorily completed relevant studies at an appropriate level at the Academy or at a recognised institution elsewhere, or who are in possession of significant professional experience in a relevant art discipline which in the judgement of the Academy merits exemption from some of the courses pertaining to the programme of study.

Admissions with advanced standing does not apply to programmes of a duration of one full-time year or less (e.g. MA in Performing Arts Studies).

Equivalency Principles

The evaluation of prior learning and professional qualification/experience for the purpose of admissions with advanced standing or as equivalent to the general admissions requirements will be guided by principles that take into account various factors. A panel of three reviewers evaluates applicants’ qualifications and experience to ensure a balanced assessment. Factors under respective equivalency principles are as follows:

  • Appropriateness – the learning or activity is the same type, and in the same or equivalent subject areas;
  • Level, depth, and quality – the learning or activity is of equivalent standard, encompassing similar depth at a sufficiently advanced level;
  • Currency – the learning or activity is up-to-date;
  • Length of time required, frequency, and other quantifiers – the learning or activity demands an equivalent time to complete at a similar intensity and frequency;
  • Peer and industry assessment – the activity is acknowledged by peers or within the field as significant, or the learning is at a recognised and/or accredited institution; and
  • Artistic, creative, and scholarly content – the learning or activity has appropriate content.
