Training as a singer is about more than developing the voice. Technique provides the foundation, but becoming an artist also depends on the musical world around you. That world influences the colleagues you meet, the repertoire you fall in love with, and what you imagine a life in music might be.
At HKAPA, rigorous individual lessons and regular coaching are grounded in the bel canto tradition. We seek the chiaroscuro balance of warmth and brilliance, with the voice leaning buoyantly on the breath and free from unnecessary tension. The result is a voice that can move with ease from the intimacy of art song to the demands of the opera stage, with the ensemble skills necessary to collaborate fully with other musicians. Technique is never an end in itself; expression in performance is the goal.
Then there is Hong Kong itself.
Training here offers classical singers a distinct vantage point. HKAPA houses its School of Music alongside Schools of Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. Singers are part of a community in which distinct traditions and approaches to performance and storytelling coexist. That proximity creates possibilities for collaboration rarely found in a traditional conservatoire.
Beyond campus, Hong Kong places you at the heart of Asia’s cultural landscape. Mainland China is next door, while the international character of the city is part of everyday life. Classical singers already move constantly between languages and historical worlds. Living here adds another dimension, changing how you think about performance and the audiences for whom you perform.
