
Biography
Ms Angela Chan is a Senior Lecturer in Strings in the School of Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Ms Chan received her master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Donald Weilerstein. She previously studied with Michael Ma at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Vera Tsu at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and Shmuel Ashkenasi, Pamela Frank and Aaron Rosand at the Curtis Institute of Music. Her teaching and artistic practice areas include violin performance, chamber music and strings education.
Ms Chan has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. She has appeared with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Staatskapelle Weimar, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. As founder and violinist of the AYA Piano Trio, she has performed in leading chamber music series across the United States, including Concerts International of Memphis, the Schneider Concert Series, Chamber Music Tulsa and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. She has collaborated with artists including Nobuko Imai, Ning Feng, Philip Setzer, Hsin Yun Huang, Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman and Marcy Rosen. Her festival appearances include the Heifetz International Music Institute as Artist-in-Residence, the Verbier Festival Academy and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Ms Chan is the winner of the 2024 Joseph Joachim Violin Competition Hannover, where she also received the prize for best interpretation of the commissioned work. She also won First Prize and the Best Concerto Interpretation Prize at the 2017 Louis Spohr Violin Competition, and is a laureate of both the Singapore International Violin Competition and the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. She is the first recipient of the Music and Dance Distinguished Performance Commendation from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and a scholarship recipient of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund and the Lin Yao Ji Foundation.
