Biography

Dr Chang Tao is a Senior Lecturer in Keyboard in the School of Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.


Dr Chang obtained a Doctoral degree  from The University of Kansas supported by a Hong Kong Jockey Club scholarship. He studied piano with Sequeira Costa, hailed as the heir to the last student of Liszt. This lineage reflects the profound tradition of the Romantic performance.


Dr Chang has been involved in extensive recital and concerto appearances across Europe, Asia and the United States, including debuts at Carnegie Hall (New York), Wigmore Hall (London) and the Salle Pleyel (Paris). He has appeared as concerto soloist with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Slovak Sinfonietta, the Slovak Radio Symphony, the Portuguese Symphony, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Symphony and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. His performances have been broadcast internationally and his live album Tao Chang in Concert was released on the VMF label. Alongside his performing career he has taught prize winning students in California, served on juries for the Music Teachers’ Association of California and taught at Azusa Pacific University, Irvine Valley College and the International Institute for Young Musicians.


Dr Chang has been recognised as the first Asian to win the Vianna da Motta International Piano Competition, the first winner of the J.N. Hummel International Piano Competition, and for inclusion in The Biography of Contemporary Chinese Artists as one of the representative figures in China’s music field.
