Biography

Dr Pui-shan CHEUNG is the first Hong Kong composer to be appointed as a full-time professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.  Her musical style is rooted in the traditions of both the East and the West, reflecting the dynamic and growing Hong Kong culture through multicultural collaborations.

Cheung has received international awards from Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Estonia, and U.S.A.. She has held residencies at the Atlantic Centre for the Arts in Florida.

She has recently been invited as the international judge in the Singapore International Composition Competition, guest composer in the Estonia Music Academy, Delian Academy for New Music (Greece), and AsianArt Ensemble in Berlin (Germany). Her recent commissions include the “Lotus Script" (女書) for cross-media chamber opera; "The Legend of the Moon Goddess" (嫦娥傳説) for digital opera and traditional Chinese Puppetry; the “Solar Contemplation III” (日賞觀III) for Asian instruments & string quartet in Berlin, Germany, and etc.

Born in Hong Kong, Pui-shan received her degrees from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (B.M.), University of California, San Diego (M.A.) and University of Missouri, Kansas City (DMA). She is currently associate professor of Composition at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
