Biography

Dr Joyce Tang is the Head of Academic Studies in Music in the School of Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.


Dr Tang is a composer, educator and researcher whose work connects artistic practice, research and curriculum development in conservatoire education. Her compositions, often developed through interdisciplinary collaboration, have been performed internationally and featured at festivals including the Hong Kong Arts Festival, ISCM World Music Days, Canberra International Music Festival, San Francisco International Arts Festival, International Computer Music Conferences (ICMC) and the Asian Composers League Festival.


She has received over 50 commissions from organisations and ensembles including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Tai Kwun. Her creative work spans orchestral and chamber music, multimedia, site-specific works, installations and theatre. Her scores are published by BabelScores, with recordings released on Navona Records and Ablaze Records. She was awarded an Asian Cultural Council Fellowship in 2017, and her cross-disciplinary work Since When received the Best Serious Composition award at the 2023 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards.


Dr Tang holds a PhD in Musicology from The University of Hong Kong and has over 15 years of experience in higher music education. She has taught at HKAPA since 2017, joining the School of Music full-time in 2021, following teaching appointments at The University of Hong Kong and other universities.


Her academic work encompasses curriculum and programme development, musicianship, music theory and analysis, artistic research and curatorial practice, with a particular interest in integrating academic and practice-based learning. At HKAPA, she has contributed extensively to the development and enhancement of the BMus and MMus curricula, strengthening connections between academic studies, research and artistic practice.


Beyond the Academy, Dr Tang serves as Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Council–Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority Committee on Music, contributing to music curriculum and assessment development in Hong Kong.
