Professor Yiu Song-lam is the Associate Dean of the School of Music and Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion in the School of Music at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Hong Kong-born oboist Yiu Song-lam is a distinguished performer, educator, entrepreneur and arts leader. A graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and an awardee of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship, Professor Yiu pursued advanced studies at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia, the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Rotterdam Conservatorium in the Netherlands, and the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany.

Professor Yiu is the founding Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, Overseas Consultant to the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a Visiting Professor at South China Normal University. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at The Education University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Radio Television Hong Kong. In 2021, Professor Yiu was elected Oboe At-Large Director of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), a position he held until 2025.

Professor Yiu appeared as soloist with England’s Goldberg Ensemble at the 1st Macao International Music Festival and has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner and the London Virtuosi on its Spanish tour.

He has given masterclasses at leading conservatoires across Asia and Europe, including the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon and the École Normale de Musique de Paris in France; the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart in Germany; the Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, The Tianjin Juilliard School and Shenzhen Arts School; Tainan University of Technology and National Chiayi University in Taiwan; the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao; the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore; the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music in Vietnam; Mahidol University and the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music in Thailand; and Chung-Ang University in Korea.

Professor Yiu is regularly invited to adjudicate international competitions, including the Muri Competition in Switzerland, the IDRS Fernand Gillet–Hugo Fox International Oboe Competition, the IDRS Young Artist Competition, the Concours de Musique de Chambre de Lyon, and the Concours de Genève. His students have won major prizes in international competitions and hold key positions in leading orchestras throughout Europe and Asia.

A former Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and former Chairperson of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Awardees Association, Professor Yiu was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the music profession.
