In celebration of the upcoming 35th Anniversary of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (the Academy) in 2019, the Academy will bring to stage four astounding dance, drama and Cantonese opera performances this Fall, which are presented by students of the respective Schools in collaboration with the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts. Free concerts, masterclasses and talks are also offered by the School of Music till the end of December 2018.
School of Dance Fall Performances, the first major performance since Ms Anna Chan Chung-ying has taken on her new role as Dean of Dance, are performed by students of Ballet, Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance. The performances comprise of two newly created ballet premiers, namely The Grid and Inside Out, each exploring contemporary and traditional forms of ballet; a contemporary piece As It Fades (Excerpt) that draws upon folk tunes, dialects and memories; and a Chinese dance piece Yellow Earth Yellow River (Excerpt) probing into the connections between man and nature – for this dance piece, live percussion accompaniment will be given by students from the School of Music.
The School of Drama will be staging two American plays written in vastly different eras — Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine created in the 20s and Rebecca Gilman’s recent work Luna Gale. The Adding Machine was once alumnus-director Alex Cheung’s graduation project. Re-creating it along with School of Drama students in today’s age of technology and artificial intelligence, the director poses a question, “Is this an era of evolution or an era of self-destruction for mankind?” Meanwhile, Luna Gale, directed by School of Drama lecturer and alumnus Terence Chang, tells the story of how a social worker handles the case of a neglected child by her young parents in a society of limited resources, a theme relevant to the Hong Kong society.
As the finale performance, Gongs and Drums, by the School of Chinese Opera, will present three Cantonese opera excerpts of contrasting styles. The School is privileged to have renowned Hong Kong Cantonese opera artist Sun Kim-long as the guest director for ‘Quarrel on the Court’ from The Villain, the General and the Heroic Beauty, providing a valuable experience for the students. Performance and music stream students will also showcase their fruits of learning in ‘Stealing the Magical Plant’ from The Legend of the White Snake and The Jade Bracelet.
Throughout the semester, the School of Music oragnises free concerts, masterclasses and talks, many of which are free to the public. Highlights include French Romanticism and Modernity concert given by Academy Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor Michaël Cousteau, featuring three works of French composers Debussy and Berlioz as well as performances by our School of Dance students. Chinese music lovers are not to miss the Academy Chinese Music Gala conducted by Wen Feng-chao, at which Zhang Zhao’s The Harmony of Seven Colours for traditional orchestra, a Hong Kong première, will be performed.
