Canvas for Students

1. Open a web browser and go to the https://www.hkapa.edu/canvas
2. Log in with your primary Email Address in account hkapa.edu instead of the account name alone and password.

• Click the Account in the Settings links in the Global Navigation bar.  
• To add a Profile Image, click the icon next to your name (this can be a picture of yourself or any picture that you would like to represent you).  
• To modify your Display Name (the name displayed in discussions, messages, and comments), language, or timezone, click the Edit Settings button on the right.  
• Click Update Settings to store your modifications. 

1. Click the Account in the Settings links in the Global Navigation bar.  
2. Under Ways to Contact on the right, add any additional contact methods to which you want Canvas messages to be sent (e.g., a second email address or SMS/Text message phone) and Register each as directed.  
3. On the left, click the Notifications link. Review each item and choose the method and location of notification.  
4. Please note that your notification preferences affect all of your courses. 

Tips

• You can control how frequently you receive notifications, such as via email or SMS, to stay informed about course activities.
• If you need help ensuring your settings are optimized for your specific school or unit, you can reach out to the Digital Learning Department in the TML Artist Block (X215) or request a 1-1 consultation.

• Upon logging in, the Dashboard acts as your central hub to find all published courses across the Academy's schools and units.
• Only courses that have been "Published" by your instructor will appear on your Dashboard.
• If a course is missing, click on the "Courses" link in the Global Navigation and select "All Courses" to see if it is currently unpublished or restricted by date.
• Use the "Color Overlay" or "Card View" settings to organise your classes visually, treating the Dashboard as a personalized toolkit for your studies.
  If you cannot see files or materials your instructor has uploaded, verify if the "Files" page is enabled in the navigation or linked within a Module.

• In the Global Navigation menu, select Calendar.  
• In the navigation bar, you can select Week, Month, or Agenda view for the calendar. The style of the calendar window is determined by the view selected. The default view of the calendar is Month.  
• The sidebar displays a quick-view calendar, a list of your courses and groups, and undated course items.
• Each personal, course, and group calendar is distinguished by a distinct colour in the calendar view. Canvas will assign a random colour to each calendar if no custom colour is specified. 
• The calendar automatically populates with assignment due dates. You can also add personal "To-Do" items to keep track of rehearsals, studio time, or library research goals.

1. Access the Announcements tab in your course navigation to see a reverse-chronological list of updates from your instructors.
2. You can view course-specific announcements by clicking the Announcements link in your course navigation, where they are listed in reverse chronological order.
3. If enabled, use the Reply function to ask clarifying questions directly on the post, allowing your peers to benefit from the shared discussion.

1. Access the Discussions link in your course navigation to see a list of active topics and peer-to-peer threads.
2. Click on the title of the specific discussion topic you wish to participate in. 
3. To start your own thread or post, click the Reply button at the top of the discussion thread. 
4. Once you have finished drafting, click Post Reply to make your contribution visible to your classmates and instructors.

Tips

• Use the "Subscribe" feature to receive notifications when classmates or instructors reply to your posts, ensuring you stay active in the learning process.
• Many discussions allow for multimodal contributions, meaning you can respond with text, images, or even video uploads
• Use the search bar or filters to find specific threads within your school or teaching unit, helping you stay focused on relevant academic dialogues.

1. Access the Assignments link in your course navigation to see a list of upcoming, past, and undated tasks.

2. Click on an assignment title to read the specific requirements, grading rubrics, and accepted file types.

3. ]Use the multimodal capabilities of Canvas to upload the specific format required—whether it is a written essay, a rehearsal video, or a link to a digital portfolio.

4. Click the Submit Assignment button (or Start Assignment) to upload your file. Always look for the "Submitted!" confirmation and timestamp to ensure your work has been successfully received by the system.

5. Once graded, return to the assignment page to view instructor comments and rubrics, using this feedback as a tool for your personal and artistic growth.

Tips

• Use the Calendar and Dashboard to view your assignment deadlines in one unified view, allowing you to balance your studio time and academic workload effectively.

• Review the rubrics provided within the assignment before you submit; this helps you understand exactly what is expected and allows you to treat the assignment as a guide for mastering specific skills.

1. Once you have submitted an assignment in Canvas, a coloured icon will appear next to your submission in the Grades or Assignments tab.
2. The report provides a percentage score representing how much of your work matches other sources; this serves as an instrument to help you review your citations.
3. Clicking the score opens the full report, where matched text is colour-coded to show exactly which parts of your submission correspond to external materials.
   1. The color of the icon indicates the level of matching text found:
      1. Blue: No matching text
      2. Green: One word to 24% matching text
      3. Yellow: 25% to 49% matching text
      4. Orange: 50% to 74% matching text
      5. Red: 75% to 100% matching text

1. Click the Quizzes link in the Course Navigation menu. Locate the specific quiz you need to take and click its title to open the instruction page
2. Before you start, check the sidebar for crucial details like time limits and number of attempts. When you are ready and have a stable internet connection, click the Take the Quiz button.
3. Follow your instructor's prompts to answer the questions. Depending on the course design, you will either see all questions on one page or navigate through them one at a time.
4. Canvas automatically saves your progress as you go. Once you have answered all questions, click Submit Quiz. You can then view your results and score to identify areas for further study or library research.

1. Click the Grades link in the Course Navigation menu to see a comprehensive list of your assignments, their status, and your current scores.
2. Look for specific symbols next to your grades:
   1. Speech Bubble: Indicates a personal comment from your instructor.
   2. Clipboard: Opens the Rubric, showing exactly how your work was evaluated against specific criteria.
   3. Coloured Similarity Icon: Links to your Turnitin Report for reviewing academic integrity and citations.
3. Click on the title of an assignment to view "crocodoc" or annotated feedback. Here, you can see specific notes your instructor has placed directly on your rehearsal video, script, or essay.
