HKAPA Dance: Summer Performance 2026

At The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, we believe in the transformative power of the arts to shape a more resilient, connected and sustainable future.

As Asia's leading conservatoire dedicated to creating, teaching and presenting the performing arts, HKAPA is committed not only to artistic excellence, but also to advancing socially responsible and environmentally conscious practices in response to the global challenges of our time.

The performing arts have a unique capacity to illuminate new possibilities, shape cultural discourse and inspire meaningful change. Sustainability is therefore not merely an institutional commitment, but an artistic and educational imperative. Grounded in world-class conservatoire training and informed by the arts' broader impact on society, we champion practices that promote environmental responsibility, cultural vitality, social inclusion and responsible stewardship, while nurturing creative work that is both artistically ambitious and responsive to the evolving needs of our world.

We recognise that today's students are tomorrow's artists, educators, designers, technicians, producers and cultural leaders. By embedding sustainable thinking across teaching, production and campus operations, we provide a living model of sustainable practice while equipping graduates with the knowledge and sense of purpose to carry this commitment throughout their careers.

Our vision for sustainability extends beyond our campuses. Through innovation and cross-sector partnerships, we seek to advance sustainable development within the arts and cultural sector and contribute to its long-term vitality in Hong Kong and beyond.

Our Approach

At HKAPA, sustainability is not a standalone initiative but a principle that informs how we create, teach and operate. From nurturing future cultural leaders and advancing sustainable artistic practices to fostering community impact and responsible stewardship, we seek to embed sustainable thinking across all aspects of Academy life.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a shared global framework for addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time and help guide the Academy's sustainability efforts.

While HKAPA supports all 17 SDGs, we have identified six priority goals where we believe the performing arts can have the greatest impact. These goals guide how HKAPA educates future artists and cultural leaders, engages communities, fosters innovation, and contributes to a more sustainable future for our cultural sector and society.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

We believe the performing arts have the power to strengthen human connection and enrich lives. Through community programmes and cross-sector partnerships, we create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with the arts in ways that support their physical, emotional and social well-being.

SDG 4: Quality Education

Through a range of scholarships and financial assistance programmes, we are committed to making our world-class conservatoire education accessible to talented students regardless of financial circumstances. Beyond degree programmes, we foster lifelong learning through junior programmes, public courses and community outreach, creating opportunities for people of all ages to deepen their understanding of the arts.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

We foster sustainable innovation in the performing arts by exploring new approaches to artistic creation and embedding sustainable practices across our curriculum, productions and campus operations. Through strategic partnerships and industry engagement, we advance sustainable theatre and production while building the knowledge and capacity needed for a more sustainable performing arts sector in Hong Kong and the wider region.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

We are committed to broadening access to the performing arts and fostering meaningful participation through community outreach, school partnerships and public programmes for people of all ages and backgrounds.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

We integrate sustainability into the way we teach, create and operate. Through direct exposure to sustainable practices, our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and sense of purpose to create work that combines artistic vision with environmental responsibility.

SDG 13: Climate Action

We champion the role of the performing arts in advancing climate action. Through teaching, artistic creation, sustainable production and sector-wide collaboration, we support the global transition to a net-zero future.

The Theatre Green Book (Hong Kong)

In October 2026, HKAPA launched the first Hong Kong adaptation of the Theatre Green Book, an internationally recognised framework for sustainable theatre practice. Widely adopted by performing arts organisations across Europe and the Americas, it provides practical guidance on productions, building management and venue operations, helping organisations embed sustainability throughout the creative process.

The Theatre Green Book (Hong Kong) not only advances sustainable practices across our productions and venue operations, but is also embedded directly into teaching and learning, cultivating future cultural leaders who unite artistic excellence with environmental responsibility. It also serves as a freely available public resource supporting Hong Kong theatre-makers, practitioners and venues in adopting sustainable creative workflows, driving long-term ecological and cultural transformation across the wider performing arts sector.
