Born in Beijing in 1932 and educated at the then Peking Academy in the late 1940s, King Hu came to Hong Kong in 1950 and began his motion-picture career as a free-lance actor, set designer, assistant director and script-writer on assignment basis.  He worked for Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited during 1958-65 before joining Union Film Company Limited in Taiwan.  Since 1970, King Hu has been able to concentrate on film direction work and is president of his own film productions company.  His list of internationally acclaimed works include Dragon Gate Inn, A Touch of Zen, (1972, Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival), The Fate of Lee Khan, The Valiant Ones, Raining in the Mountain (1978, Los Angeles Film Festival Award), Legend of the Mountain, The Juvenizer, All the King’s Men, The Wheel of Life, The Swordsman, and Painted Skin.  King Hu was selected by International Film Guide as one of the five directors of the year 1978, and elected the Best Director at the Golden Horse Film Festival, Taipei, in 1979.  He was honoured with special Retrospective Showings at many prestigious centres including the Pacific Film Archive, the Art Institute of Chicago, UCLA Film Archive, Nantes Film Festival, etc.  A King Hu Film Festival was mounted in Tokyo, Japan, in 1989; and he was presented the Life Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Film Directors Guild in 1993.  Mr President, I have the honour to present for the award of Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Mr King Hu.
