A veteran of over 50 years on stage, Mr Mo Yu-tin — best known by his stage name, Sun Kim-long — is a distinguished performer, producer, playwright, and educator whose work has been central to the promotion and production of Cantonese opera. Recognised as one of the most accomplished figures in Chinese opera, Mr Mo began his apprenticeship with master Wu Gongxia in the 1960s, and honed his martial-arts skills under Xu Junhan. After establishing a prominent international profile across Singapore and Malaysia in the 1980s, he returned to Hong Kong in the 1990s to further advance his career.
Throughout his prolific creative journey, Mr Mo has expanded the Cantonese opera canon by founding the Xin Feng Huang Cantonese Opera Troupe in 2001 and the Xin Hui Huang Cantonese Opera Troupe in 2002, recording celebrated albums, and penning notable scripts including Reflection of Beauties in Lotus Pond, The Green Jade Hairpin, The Heroes of Tang, Pearl Flag, and A Love Poem Stained with Blood.
Mr Mo has shown an unwavering commitment to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the School of Chinese Opera. As a visiting artist, he has nurtured promising talent, enhancing student training and elevating the School’s performance standards through lectures, workshops, and repertoire guidance for its original production Gongs and Drums.
Beyond artistic instruction, Mr Mo has generously contributed his industry expertise to steer the School of Chinese Opera's academic development. He served as an industry representative for the Internal Programme Validation of the Diploma in Cantonese Opera Foundations in 2019, sat as a panel member for the Internal Programme Validation and Review of the School's programmes in 2022, and provided strategic advisory input during the 2023 consultation on Cantonese opera scriptwriting curriculum development.
In the broader community, Mr Mo is a committed advocate for cultural inheritance, having spent over two decades conducting educational outreach across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions to inspire young audiences. In his current capacity as Artistic Director of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre Venue Partnership Scheme’s Elite Young Talents Cantonese Opera Legacy Program (formerly the Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase), he actively mentors emerging artists to ensure the sustainable development of the traditional art form.
In addition to his artistic endeavours, he renders vital public service as a member of the Full-Length Cantonese Opera Playscript Assessment Panel and as an examiner in Xiqu for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), having previously served as Vice Chairman of The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong (2007–2026), as well as on the Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee and the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Advisory Committee. His significant contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the HKADC Artist of the Year for Xiqu in 2018, the Home Affairs Bureau Commendation Award in 2009, the Chief Executive's Commendation for Community Service in 2012, and the Medal of Honour awarded by the Government of HKSAR in 2019.
Through his masterly stage achievements, selfless mentorship, and unwavering support for academic excellence, Mr Mo has profoundly enriched the Academy community and made an enduring contribution to the preservation and promotion of Hong Kong's cultural heritage.
