Citation

Mr Liu Yuen-sung has a passion for music, a passion he expresses through his musicianship and his contribution to the founding and custodianship of a number of performing companies both in Hong Kong and in Canada. In addition, he founded the YS Liu Foundation, which is devoted to funding education of young music talents and performing groups.

Mr Liu studied violin under the tutelage of the renowned Professor Arrigo Foa in Hong Kong and became a regular performer on radio and television both as a soloist and as a member of the famed Foa Duo and String Quartet.

He was a member/concertmaster of the former Hong Kong Philharmonic in the 60’s, performing as soloist on many occasions playing violin concerti ranging from Mozart to Wieniawski. Especially notable was his recording of The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto which he premiered in Hong Kong in 1969.

Mr Liu is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, an appointment he has held since 2008. Under his Chairmanship, the orchestra has contributed significantly to the cultural enrichment of Hong Kong through its performances, while benefiting many young people with its versatile education programmes.

In 1992, Mr Liu founded the British Columbia Sinfonietta in Vancouver, serving as Chairman and concertmaster until 1995. During his tenure, the orchestra put on fund-raising concerts for a number of local charities.

Mr Liu was one of the founding members of the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly the SAR Ensemble) in 1999 and has been the company’s Chairman and concertmaster since 2003. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Youth Orchestra.

As a philanthropist devoted to music education, Mr Liu has been sponsoring activities for young musicians in Hong Kong for many years. Annually since 2006, YS Liu Foundation scholarships and SAR Philharmonic scholarships have been given to music students of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, in addition to opportunities for the students to perform in concerts with the SAR Philharmonic. The SAR Philharmonic also collaborates with the Academy’s vocal studies department in the production of operas and concerts. As a result of Mr Liu’s patronage, four “Classes for Kids” Christmas concerts are held at the Academy’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre every year and the revenue is used to fund the scholarships for the Academy students.

The YS Liu Foundation also donates to the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Asian Youth Orchestra and Music for our Young Foundation, among the many other charities in Hong Kong. The Foundation also provides scholarships to many outstanding university students in China.

Mr Liu is Chairman of the Jenston Group of companies in Hong Kong and China, and founder of the YS Liu Foundation.
