Chinese opera is designated by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a specialised study area in Chinese performing arts. It is recognised as a unique and supreme example of total theatre and a valuable part of Chinese culture, requiring the most profound refinement of skills in singing, acting, characterisation, movement, choreography and acrobatics. With strong support from the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Academy has launched tertiary education in Chinese opera to preserve and develop this traditional art form.

 

Established in September 2013, the School of Chinese Opera offers the world’s first accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Chinese Opera, marking a milestone of the Academy’s endeavour in developing Chinese opera. In 2018, the Diploma in Cantonese Opera, the Advanced Diploma in Cantonese Opera and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Chinese Opera Programmes were successfully revalidated for Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (HKQF) Level 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Starting from September 2020, the School has successfully been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) for a new programme, Diploma in Cantonese Opera Foundations (HKQF Level 4), to replace the existing Diploma programme.

 

The School of Chinese Opera provides professional and comprehensive training in Cantonese opera performance and music to build a solid foundation and attain professional standards and learning outcomes. All our programmes comprise of majors in Cantonese Opera Performance and Cantonese Opera Music. The programmes emphasise on both practical studies, and contextual studies such as Chinese culture and Chinese opera history. It aims to broaden students’ artistic horizons and to promote their capabilities in performance, analysis, evaluation and engagement in creative works. Students will be inspired through an articulated, progressive and student-centred programme structure, which in effect strengthen their professional skills and artistic knowledge. Our programmes include the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree in Chinese Opera programme and the Diploma in Cantonese Opera Foundations. Starting from September 2023, the School will offer a new Professional Diploma in Cantonese Opera for strengthening our effort in nurturing future practitioners. Diploma in Cantonese Opera Foundation programme provides students with solid foundation training in the Cantonese Opera art form.
