The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) will be presenting The Woman in Kenzo from 27 to 30 November 2019 at the Academy Drama Theatre. The Woman in Kenzo is the only musical adapted from the novel of the same name. It depicts the economic boom and glamour of Hong Kong in the 1970s. Leon Ko (composer and music arrangement) and Chris Shum (adaptation and lyricist) will be collaborating with teachers and students of the School of Drama, as well as the creative team from the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts in this musical production to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Academy.
Directed by Professor Roy Szeto (Head of Directing and Artistic Director of School Production) and Chan Suk-yi (Head of Actor’s Training) of the School of Drama, The Woman in Kenzo is a jubilant musical adapted from the original story of Mary Chin. “The audience would feel the energy and passion, in a bit distant, yet familiar, Hong Kong setting,” says Szeto. “This original musical combining good songs, acting, dance and artistic elements is filled with humour, vigour and pathos – definitely a not-to-be-missed Academy production!” adds Chan.
Synopsis
Mary Chin may be good looking, with a nice figure and a high-paid job, and yet she is unhappy. Unable to understand why, she blames it on her long-term boyfriend Andy, who still has not proposed to her. Mary is fortunate enough to have three besties – Mimi, Martha and Jan – who all share similar outlooks on love and life. However, the appearance of the mysterious “blue blood-prince” Chang Cho-yam, will set these women on a collision course…
