HKAPA Staging "Dust and Dawn" — A Work Combining Physical Theatres and Chinese Opera Elements

6 May 2019

DustandDawn

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) is presenting Dust and Dawn from 6 to 11 May, 2019 at the Academy Studio Theatre. Written by Dean of Drama Professor Poon Wai-sum, Dust and Dawn is set at the turbulent times of the late Yuan dynasty. It tells parallel lines of stories — Zhu Yuanzhang’s rising to power and his path to becoming the emperor; leader of The White Lotus Society Lin Nanfeng’s embroilment in battles and in love; Lin’s master Ma Yue’s deep affection for his old lover Yuriko even after he decided to become a monk. Each facing complicated situations, the characters struggle to find the middle path and lead a peaceful life…

The drama is directed and choreographed by School of Drama lecturer (Acting) Tony Wong, who was recently awarded “Best Director” at The 28th Hong Kong Drama Awards. Infusing physical movements with the script, Wong trains Academy students to make good use of their body and the surrounding space as tools to deliver precisely the thoughts and emotions of the character. He also incorporated many Chinese opera elements in the drama. Aside from having one of the student actors to employ Chinese opera combating and singing techniques in the performance, he has also invited Kong Chun-kit (alumnus of the School of Chinese Opera) as the bandleader, playing live accompaniment alongside School of Drama students.

As the production team of this drama, the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts of the Academy is in charge of the design and production of the stage set, costume, lighting, sound and props. The extraordinary design of the main set not only allows much meaningful interaction with the student actors, but also echoes the central theme of the drama and creates ample room for imagination for the audience.
