Staff development workshop in Practice as Research: Exploring research and PaR methods and unpacking research questions

Dates: 20, 21 and 22nd February 2023.

The workshop focused on the articulation of technique as knowledge and stretch(es) the boundaries of what Practice as Research can do in the field of art/performance making and research. The workshop aimed to add on the two initial workshops that PAR has delivered to Academy's staff in previous years and provide resources and skills for Practice as Research projects developed within the Academy, as well as to impact on teaching and learning activities at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

The workshop focused on the crafting of research questions and methods and included sessions offered by PAR staff as well as a prominent scholar in the field, offering the possibility for exploring PaR-related methods.

Guest Speaker – Dr Joanne Scott (University of Salford, UK)

Title of the lecture: "Inside PaR processes: case studies and insights"

Dr. Jo Scott is a Senior Lecturer in Performance, Programme Leader MA Contemporary Performance Practice, Co-convener Practice as Research Centre of Excellence at University of Salford, Manchester, UK. She is an intermedial practitioner and academic researcher with a broad interest in performance practices making creative uses of digital technologies. She experiments with video, text, image, sounds, objects, and song to create live events, fixed media installations, online video texts and audio walks. Her practice uses the act of mixing as an exploration of feelings and meanings that emerge at the intersections of the elements in play. Her current research explores the ways in which this intermedial practice intersects with wild urban landscapes and a shared quality of wildness in cities, digital processes and natural growth.
