JOCKEY CLUB EAST-MEETS-WEST SERIES: ARISTOPHANES' LYSISTRATA

“Make love, not war”—ancient Greek comedy comes to life

As far back as 411 BCE, Aristophanes was using his bold wit to call for peace in times of war. His play Lysistrata broke new ground by placing women at the heart of the story and it remains one of 11 surviving comedies from ancient Greece. Now the Hong Kong Arts Festival teams up with celebrated Greek director Katerina Evangelatos and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre to revive this classic in a Chinese-language adaptation. Staying true to the original’s outrageous humour and theatrical flair, the production infuses Lysistrata with music, dance and satire to tell the story of how tenderness can triumph over force.
