The School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts offers a dynamic range of production-related courses in performing and entertainment arts. From theatre to theme parks and live events, the School’s professionally focused programmes are designed to prepare students for exciting careers in entertainment and the cultural industries. In addition to its MFA, BFA, Diploma and Certificate Programmes in Set and Costume Design, Costume Technology, Property Making, Scenic Art, Lighting Design and Technology, Sound Design and Technology, Music Production, Stage & Event Management and Technical Direction; recognising today’s and tomorrow’s needs for top production crew by local and regional entertainment companies, the School also offers fast-track intensive courses.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts and working under the supervision of the Costume Shop Manager, the Costume Maker is a member of the Costume Shop. The postholder is responsible for producing high quality costumes, related accessories, and hairpieces for all Academy productions in accordance with designers’ specifications. Working closely with costume designers, makers, teachers, and students, the role involves costume construction, collaboration on design and functionality, and timely delivery of finished pieces. The Costume Maker also supports the safe operation and maintenance of the Costume Department and undertakes general duties as assigned.
Applicants should have:
(a) Relevant professional experience in costume making or related disciplines are required; experience in tailoring and/or stretch wear sewing is an advantage;
(b) Strong pattern making and draping skills;
(c) Strong sewing skills, especially sewing experience with stretch fabric.
(d) Strong costume fitting skills;
(e) Good knowledge in fabrics, materials and sewing machines and tools;
(f) Good knowledge of theatrical costuming and costume history;
(g) Strong planning, organising and communication skills;
(h) Good eye for details;
(i) Ability to take initiative and work independently; and
(j) Good communication in spoken and written English and Chinese (ie, Cantonese and Putonghua).
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Appointment will be on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and mutual agreement. A gratuity payment may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract. Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. The starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
