Glam Rock

Celebrating the music of Depeche Mode, Freddie Mercury & Queen and HK rock band Beyond

Immerse yourself in high drama and phenomenal music at Glam Rock, an evening featuring Andonis Foniadakis’ Strangelove with music by Depeche Mode, Trey McIntyre’s Mercury Half-Life with a score by Freddie Mercury and Queen and an exciting world premiere Martlet from HKB’s Choreographer-in-Residence Hu Song Wei Ricky, and Mai Jingwen set to the music of Beyond.

Inspired by '80s pop pioneers Depeche Mode’s powerful, evocative lyrics, European sensation Foniadakis’ thrilling hit Strangelove creatively explores the complexities of the human condition with death-defying lifts and electrifying choreography brimming with energy and passion. The unique blend of dark, atmospheric electronic sounds are the perfect backdrop to a visually and emotionally captivating ballet that is a testament to the transformative power of music and dance. South China Morning Post reported that the performance ‘had people on their feet screaming and cheering at the end, something rarely seen in Hong Kong’.

‘Strangelove had people on their feet screaming and cheering at the end, something rarely seen in Hong Kong’ — South China Morning Post

An emotional work that speaks to the power of community by celebrating the everyone’s individuality, Trey McIntyre’s energetic and wildly popular Mercury Half-Life brings to life popular songs from iconic rock band Queen like ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ and ‘Bohemian Rapsody’. McIntyre says Queen’s music has the perfect blend of showiness and rhythm to highlight something that doesn’t often appear on the ballet stage: tap dance, which creates a new dimension to the familiar, beloved music.

Spotlighting music from Hong Kong indie rock band Beyond, Hu Song Wei Ricky and Mai Jingwen’s uplifting new work Martlet embraces the optimism and humanity in the songs and features costumes by Robert Wun, the first Hong Kong designer to debut at Paris Haute Couture Week with eclectic, sculptural designs. Beyond is best known for revolutionizing the local music scene with their unique blend of rock and socially conscious lyrics, inspiring generations with songs like ‘Boundless Oceans Vast Skies’ and ‘Glorious Years’, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s cultural identity.

Glam Rock promises to be an unforgettable show that delivers powerful human connections through electrifying dance and style!

A heart-to-heart talk between Smetana and Dvořák – the giants of Czech music
on the occasion of Smetana’s 200th birthday celebration and Czech Year of Music

We remember Smetana and Dvořák as two of the best-known Czech composers today – probably because of Dvořák’s New World Symphony and Smetana’s My Fatherland. But we know much less of Dvořák and Smetana as we do other composers of the day. Today, through “live” conversations between the two composers, and possibly with the audience, we will be able to find out more about these men behind the music, especially of Dvořák, whose New World Symphony will be analysed as well as performed.

We let the composers introduce and speak for themselves about their lives and work… and let you into their world. “Which train did you take to come to this concert? I want to know the model number.” This could be how a typical conversation with Dvořák started, especially with his students. Now who would have guessed that Dvořák was a train fanatic!

Come and find out more about the composers and enjoy a concert with activities and information!
