Professor Scholz graduated from the University of Vienna in 1960 and completed his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in 1962.

He retired in 2004, after teaching musical analysis at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik for many years, and serving as Director of the Institute.

Professor Scholz was Deputy Rector of the Hochschule, Deputy Chairman of the Austrian Rectors’ Conference, and from 1984 – 1988 served as Rector of the Hochschule, which has now been renamed ‘der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien’ - the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts.

His overseas activities have included periods as Guest Professor in Music Theory at Indiana University, Bloomington; Guest Professor at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok; the Austria Chair, Stanford University, California; and Guest Professor, Central European Chair at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.

Other public duties in Europe have included: Secretary-General of the International Music Education group of UNESCO, and Representative of the University of Music and Arts in ASEA UNINET programme.

As well as his musicological and scholarly research papers, Professor Scholz has contributed to more than 20 music publications.

Beginning with the earliest quality assessment exercises in the late 1980s and continuing throughout the 1990s, he has had a key involvement with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in its accreditation and validation processes. More recently, he was instrumental in bringing about the strategic alliance between the Academy and the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien.
