Situated at a strategic crossroads of the Northern Route of the ancient Silk Road, Qiuci (Kucha) was a major meeting ground of civilizations and one of the most significant cultural hubs in Eurasian history. Within the vast constellation of Chinese civilization, Qiuci shines like a radiant pearl that has traversed more than a millennium. Through its rich and pluralistic cultural synthesis, it radiates a distinctive allure and an enduring brilliance.
 
Qiuci culture bears the imprints and lifeblood of diverse peoples across time. From donor figures in Hu-style dress depicted in Buddhist cave murals, to the multi-ethnic rhythms of Su Muzhe, the principle of “you within me, and me within you” is vividly embodied. Qiuci thus stands as a living testament to the historical and cultural formation of Xinjiang, and a compelling illustration of the pluralistic unity of Chinese civilization. The dance drama Qiuci emerges from these historical traces. Through the cross-temporal interweaving of Kumārajīva’s eastward journey and Xuanzang’s westward pilgrimage, the production brings to the stage the dynamic processes of cultural convergence, transformation, and artistic exchange that define Qiuci’s heritage.
 
The dance drama Qiuci brings together a wide range of creative forces. Tong Ruirui serves as Chief Choreographer, with cultural historian and literary scholar Han Ziyong as playwright. The core creative team includes producer Li Dong; composer Guo Sida; executive choreographers He Tao and Wang Peng; set designer Qin Liyun; costume designer Yang Donglin; visual director Wang Han; choreographers Li Hongjun, Wei Wei, Gulijianati Shatar, and Fu Yangxue; multimedia designer Hu Tianji; lighting designer Liu Zhao; styling designer Xu Bin; and prop designer Lei Peng, alongside many other distinguished Chinese artists. The production is performed by an ensemble of young dancers from the Xinjiang Art Theatre Song and Dance Company and Xinjiang Normal University, joined by outstanding young dance artists from across China, forming a dynamic and contemporary performing body.

This original new work draws inspiration from the cultural essence of the traditional Chinese “Eight Graces”: Music, Go, Calligraphy, Painting, Poetry, Fragrance, Flowers, and Tea. Blending traditional and contemporary theatrical forms, this production elegantly embodies the refined aesthetic of the East. The TENG Ensemble moves beyond classical convention, performing live across a fusion of musical idioms, while the dancers use their body language to explore the spirit of the “Eight Graces”, in contemplating the meaning of life.
 
Amidst the bustle of urban life, dance, theatre, and music interweave to reveal the rhythm of existence. Each step, dialogue, and melody is a rumination on the “Eight Graces”—a journey of the soul that cultivates wisdom deeply entwined with people and the environment, seeking to restore lost balance and tranquility.
 
 
Exploring the philosophy of harmony between Chinese culture and nature, the production embraces the concept of green theatre, prioritising the use of renewable or reusable materials to reduce  carbon footprint, practising environmental responsibility while conserving cultural heritage. This cross-cultural dialogue between Hong Kong and Singapore encapsulates the contemporary appeal of intangible cultural heritage from a unique perspective.

“The Gruffalo is the perfect intro to theatre for kids!” The Londonist, UK

Join Mouse on a daring adventure through the deep, dark wood in Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaptation of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

Searching for hazelnuts, Mouse meets the cunning Fox, the eccentric old Owl and the party mad Snake. Will the story of the terrifying Gruffalo save Mouse from ending up as dinner for these hungry woodland creatures? After all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo – is there?

Songs, laughs and fun for children aged 3 and up and their grown-ups, in the much-loved show that’s toured Britain and the world!
