The School of Music at the Academy offers comprehensive full-time programmes, including Diploma, BMus, MMus, and a planned doctoral degree, alongside its highly successful Junior Music Programme – comparable to the ‘Junior Schools’ of other world-leading conservatoires. In keeping with its conservatoire status, the School’s philosophy is centred on performance and reflects the unique cultural mix of Hong Kong, with emphasis on both Western and Chinese traditions. The School comprises the Departments of Strings, Keyboard, Voice, Woodwind/Brass/Percussion (‘WBP’), Composition, Chinese Music, Academic Studies and Junior Music.

 

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in music composition, electroacoustic music, manage the Electronic Music Studio and Composition Lab, lead curriculum development in composition, electroacoustic music, and foster collaboration across departments and schools. The postholder will also provide administrative support to the Dean of the School of Music and the Head of Composition by assisting in the planning, scheduling, curriculum development, staff development, assessment, and evaluation of all aspects of the music programme. 

Applicants should have: 
• A recognised degree in Music Composition (preferably a doctoral degree), or an equivalent professional qualification; 
• Normally, a minimum of four years of teaching and administrative experience at Undergraduate and Master’s level;
• Proven ability to deliver individual major lessons and teach courses across contemporary composition, orchestration, electroacoustic/computer music, and multidisciplinary creative projects; 
• Ability to foster cross-cultural connections, balancing Contemporary and Traditional Practices; 
• Experience in serving on departmental or academic committees and assisting with curriculum development, staff development, and program assessments; 
• Experience in overseeing the administration, scheduling, maintenance, and strategic hardware/software upgrades of an academic Electronic Music Studio and Composition Lab; 
• Advanced technical proficiency with current Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and programming languages (e.g., Max/MSP, SuperCollider, Pure Data, Ableton Live, Logic Pro), sensor-based performance systems, and multimedia software (e.g., QLab, Jitter, TouchDesigner, Strudel, Antescofo); 
• Ability to effectively leverage and integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learning technologies into teaching, assessment, research, and artistic productions ; and
• A good command of both written and spoken English. Fluency in Chinese (including Putonghua and Cantonese) is an advantage.

 

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT 
Appointment will be on a two-year renewable contract, subject to performance and mutual agreement.  A gratuity payment may be granted upon satisfactory completion of the full contract. Fringe benefits include leave, medical, and dental benefits. The starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The expected commencement date will be 24 August 2026.
